What is the ServiceNow Monitoring MP?

If you have ServiceNow, you will know that ServiceNow publish the availability of your ServiceNow instance so you know when it is down. Plus, more than likely your ServiceNow instance is Saas (i.e. hosted by ServiceNow) so largely handles availability, so why monitor ServiceNow in the first place?

ServiceNow will tell you when your instance is down, but it can’t tell you what experience your users are getting when it is up.

The number one cause of poor user experience is latency and this can be greatly impacted by the network between your computer and instance. We recently did a webinar and blog on our ServiceNow Monitoring MP, to showcase how Arup, a global architectural engineering firm, used our MP to detect latency related issues in their own IT environment. Here’s what they had to say:

Cookdown’s ServiceNow Monitoring MP was setup and configured in less than a day and the support & service provided by Cookdown has been five star! We recommend the ServiceNow Monitoring MP to any organisation, wanting a fast, effective and easily integrated solution to monitor and manage their ServiceNow instance.

Why use a dashboard?

The MP alone exposes 38 performance counters from your ServiceNow instance and lets you make watchers of any SCOM agent, enabling you to setup watchers in each office/region to understand end user experience (which comes down to availability + latency).

However, putting a dashboard on top of all that useful data in SCOM, gives you true insight and provides vital context to the Alerts you are seeing.

For example, you can see the impact of a node performance issue on one or more watchers/regions, see when performance changes in near real-time and get the info needed to troubleshoot an issue, enabling you to answer questions like - Why is my instance’s latency so high, in the Australian office…?

What is in the dashboard pack?

Rather than you having to build your own dashboard and understand what pieces of our MP are important, we’ve done the hard bit for you!

We roll up the status for your Instance(s), node(s) and watchers in the three donuts at the top of the dashboard, so it only takes a quick glance to see what needs your attention.

On the second row we look at the watchers in more detail, if a watcher is red, why? Are there DNS issues preventing name resolution? Is latency fluctuating at certain times of the day? Is your instance simply not accessible?

Row three illustrates any alerts our MP generates, which can be raised for ServiceNow instance latency issues, connection issues (such as DNS resolution failures, connection refusals and timeouts), discovery failures and more.

If you have Cookdown Alert Sync, this tile will show Incident info on any of the alerts pushed to ServiceNow, as the incident data is pulled back into ServiceNow, via the Alert Sync’s bi-directional sync feature.

Finally, we expose how your live users are load balanced across the nodes that make up your instance (useful for identifying route causes of performance issues) and connection fetch time; showing problems with ServiceNow itself that affect user experience rather than issues between watchers and ServiceNow.

Happy monitoring!
